Mourinho believes France's defeat to Switzerland in the last 16 of the Euro was a failure on all accounts. The Roma boss, who is currently a pundit on 'TalkSport', offered his insight on the game, where he highlight Deschamps' error as well as the good work by Lloris.
“When you make a change on minute 89 and take one of your best players, Griezmann, that was playing amazing well and make that change... that’s a big gamble. When you make that change and they equalise on minute 91 or 92, you go to extra-time, you want to shoot yourself because you left Griezmann out of that extra-time", he said.
“I also believe that France had a bit of fun, in football I believe you must have fun after the game not during the game. Then... they made one mistake I think about many, many times. When you go to extra-time, when you are in a game where there is the possibility of extra-time, you have to be very careful with the changes you make", he continued
Regarding the French 'keeper, who saved a penalty in the second half to keep the score 0-1 and who Mourinho knows well after his spell at Tottenham, he stated: "The reality was Hugo Lloris kept the game open when he saved the penalty... Switzerland was much better than France and could be 2-0 after 58 minutes or so, they missed the penalty and the game changed". Shortly after, France scored two quick-fire goals to mount a comeback.
In more general terms, Mourinho heaped praise on Switerzerland who, since Petkovic took the reigns, has shown their quality despite being the underdog in many of their encounters: "I think it is a failure (for France). But Switzerland, without stars, they were a team. [Vladimir] Petkovic has done amazing work over many years – they went from a team that could barely qualify to being consecutively in final phases of World Cups and Euros."
